As we approach the end of 2024, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable achievements of Primal Pictures/Anatomy.tv this year. Here we highlight a few of our notable initiatives: 3D Real-time Embryology, our Accessibility and Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) pledge, 3D Real-time Functional Anatomy, and Anatomy Tutorials for Physical Therapy. They not only marked significant milestones, but also set the stage for even more exciting developments in 2025 and beyond.

3D Real-time Embryology
We’re very excited to have launched 3D Real-time Embryology, a truly revolutionary tool that brings the intricate world of embryology to life. By integrating high-quality, data-driven 3D models from Amsterdam UMC into our Real-time UI, we’ve created a dynamic reference tool both engaging and educational. This innovative approach transforms how embryology is taught and understood, making complex concepts accessible and fascinating for both faculty and students.
I must say I am very impressed and believe this has the potential to greatly aid embryology teaching. Students have said multiple times to me that they struggle to visualize content especially because the structures change over time.

Accessibility
This year, we made significant strides ensuring our resources are accessible to everyone, updating both the Anatomy.tv platform and the Anatomy & Physiology module to meet WCAG Level AA standards. This means our content is now more approachable and robust, providing equal learning opportunities for all users. We’re proud to lead the way in delivering universally accessible anatomical education solutions.
I’m thrilled to see the significant improvement in product accessibility for screen reader users! Kudos to the team for their efforts in making the product more inclusive and user-friendly. This is a complex product, and the team continues to work on improving its accessibility. Accessibility is a continuous process; the Primal Pictures team has integrated accessibility into their development processes to ensure accessibility stays in focus.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Pledge
After months of reflection, research, consulting with the field experts, and preparation, we released our Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) pledge and roadmap with pride. It’s the first step toward initiating positive changes and brushing off the remnants of various inequalities still present in the anatomy world. We have thoroughly reviewed our product portfolio and planned our actions to ensure our 30+ year history supports and follows a more inclusive approach. This is a commitment to long-term change and will evolve over the coming years as we learn and grow. We are open to feedback so please let us know your thoughts!
I was blown away by the Primal team’s preparation of their ED&I pledge. Primal’s commitment to diversity and inclusion was clear in the thoroughness of their work. Every organization, especially larger ones that seem to approach this half-heartedly, should follow their example. ED&I pledges shouldn’t be a nice gesture — they need to be strategic initiatives that will create lasting impact.

3D Real-time Functional Anatomy
We also introduced 3D Real-time Functional Anatomy, an interactive learning experience bridging the gap between traditional 2D representations and the dynamic reality of functional anatomy. With features like dissectible structures, musculoskeletal animations, and 3D goniometers, this tool offers a hands-on, immersive learning experience for all those studying functional anatomy. It’s been wonderful to see how this product is helping students and professionals alike master the complexities of human anatomy in motion.
Students often ask, 'How detailed do I need to know anatomy?' I reply, 'How detailed of a therapist do you want to be?' Primal challenges the student to take those details to a level of mastery. Teaching gross anatomy with a physical therapy focus means I must make sure the student can associate anatomy with the purpose of its function as to evaluate and treat movement dysfunction. Primal touches on all of this.

Anatomy Tutorials for Physical Therapy
With the launch of Anatomy Tutorials for Physical Therapy, we now offer a comprehensive and engaging education resource integrating Physiopedia’s expertise and practical insights with Primal’s 3D models. These curated videos provide a collaborative learning environment, perfect for physical therapy students. We’re delighted to now have a platform that combines academic excellence with practical relevance, making learning both enjoyable and effective.
The video and commentary are excellent and together work well as a first learning resource or as a review resource for those who need a refresher in the anatomy and function.
